…what clients say about working with me and the Davis® programmes
“I found the Gift of Dyslexia via a recommendation from an Educational Psychologist we engaged after our concerns falling on deaf ears at school. It came as no surprise to learn he was dyslexic, as his older sister had had the same journey a few years before. However, he was becoming distressed and angry, upset and frustrated at school. In Primary 4, aged 8, he had a reading age of 6 but yet was in the gifted range of intelligence in verbal reasoning and complex thinking.
On a flight to Spain I read Ron Davis’s book and it set us on a journey that in the last five months has changed the lives of both our children. Through the Davis Foundation i found Gilda Westermann, and could not believe our luck that she lives 30 minutes from us. I was so desperate that I contacted her from the Alhambra!
She was calm, reassuring and shortly on return from holiday she started to work with our son. They both worked very hard together and it was not easy at times. Getting a very active 8 year old boy with such low self esteem to engage is no mean feat. Yet by the end of two weeks of intense work he went back to school with a much better attitude and new techniques to try. Gilda then followed up by communicating with the school, has met the class teacher and so he has ongoing daily support. Our school have been fantastic in supporting him thanks in part to the clear communication from Gilda. She is also on hand to answer emails and questions and continues to support us as we work through the mastery sequence.
Shortly afterwards we enrolled our 10 year daughter in the programme with Gilda and we are now working with her also.
Our son has gone from a reading age of 6 to a reading age of 9, with some aspects of literacy aged 12, and in in the top cohort in national testing done only 4 months after starting to work with Gilda. More importantly he has more confidence in his abilities and is a happier boy with a much better attitude in class. He no longer continually refers to himself as stupid.
Our daughter grows in confidence daily with her reading and for the last few weeks I am delighted to see her sitting reading her book at breakfast, taking to bed with her and asking if she can read at bedtime, reading for fun. This is a sight I thought i would never see.
I have no doubt both children have benefited immensely from working through the Davis Program with Gilda. We already had many things in place for them and felt we were hitting our heads agains a brick wall. It is much more than just learning how to read more fluently, it has given them tools to problem solve, have faith in themselves and trust the process.
Is is not easy and does require a lot of effort on the part of the parent – the initial program is only the beginning. At times it seems impossible to fit everything into daily life of work, school, homework, clubs and Davis. But Gilda is there to support, and the results I mention above speak for themselves.
We are on the Davis journey and so thankful for the Gift of Dyslexia, and finding Gilda.”
“Gilda helped me get more confident about my ability and know that anything is possible if I use the tools and put in the work.” Andy, age 11
“His confidence and self-esteem have increased and his ability to read has really improved.” Andy’s Mum
“I enjoyed the course immensely and it has hugely benefited me. The skills I learnt with Gilda have been hugely beneficial and have allowed me to improve my concentration and handwriting along with many other aspects. It was a very successful experience.” Tom, age 16
“Gilda was very easy and professional in organising working with my son. He has taken a massive leap forward since working with Gilda – both in his social manner and practical skills. Having failed most of his prelims, he took Gilda’s course and then sailed through his exams. He did not lack intelligence but lacked the skills to understand what was being asked of him in the questions and the ability to write coherently and legibly. He found Gilda fun and yet clear and I appreciated her understanding and respect of him.” Tom’s Mum
“Gilda is an incredibly patient practitioner who is generous with her time and wealth of knowledge, as she is with her tea and biscuits. The programme and overall experience gave me a much greater understanding of myself, and the techniques I have learned and continue to practice have allowed me to manage my thought processes to deal with different situations much more effectively. Dyslexia is undeniably a gift but, like any gift or talent, it requires effective management and a better understanding to allow it to be utilized, and I believe that the Davis® Dyslexia Correction programme with Gilda is a great way to achieve this. Many thanks again for everything.” Matt, 28
